When driving in Slovakia it is good to know

​It is useful to respect some basic rules for driving in Slovakia, although they are in many aspects similar to neighbouring countries:
  • there is zero tolerance to alcohol (alcohol use is subject of heavy penalties, or prohibition of driving),
  • your headlights must be always on (not depending if day/night, sunny/cloudy),
  • seat belts are obligatory for all passengers,
  • use of mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited (hands-free are allowed),
  • eating and doing anything else not related to driving is prohibited,
  • winter tires are compulsory on all roads covered with snow or ice,
  • safety reflection vests, warning triangle and first aid kits are compulsory for each car,
  • each vehicle must be insured.
The maximum speed limits:
Motorways - 130 km per hour
Regional roads - 90 km per hour
Roads in towns and villages - 50 km per hour
