Rača belongs to the most popular city quarters in Bratislava for living. The combination of the modernity with elements of village atmosphere, surrounding forests and vineyards, good accessibility to the rest of the city, or large variety of services of all kinds, it altogether attracts many new inhabitants to have nice and peaceful life here. Not surprisingly, it resulted in completion of more new housing estates spread across the city quarter territory, nevertheless still in acceptable scale and style. Population of Rača is growing and it had 21 736 inhabitants (December 2017) according to the official data.
Rača is located on the north-east outskirt of the city on the southeast foot of Male Karpaty Mountains. It was an autonomous village in the past, known since first third of the 13th century. In the second half of the 16th century Rača received several privileges and was promoted to a town. Rača administratively merged with Bratislava after the Second World War. Massive new housing development started to transform local environment from rural to more urban since 50s. Many new citizens moved here from other parts of Bratislava or other Slovak towns and villages.
Compared to other city quarters of Bratislava, Rača is more residential, without any larger concentrations of industry or administrative buildings. At present one of the main and important sectors of the economy in Rača is back again agriculture – viticulture and wine-making. Favourable geographic location and geological base predispose the land to be used just for this purpose. The number of winegrowers and wine producers who actively devote themselves to the tradition of wine trade increases. Nevertheless due to good accessibility, those living in Rača have very good access to workplaces located in whole Bratislava.
The capital of Slovakia - Bratislava has two tier local self-government system in which Rača is one of 17 city quarters with own self-government in Bratislava. Above this local level there is “upper” city-wide level of self-government in Bratislava. As a result, citizens in Rača have their own directly elected Mayor and Local Council responsible for numerous local powers. Citizens living here can enjoy wide range of local services provided by public or private sectors. There is a full spectrum of educational facilities – from pre-school facilities (kindergartens, nurseries), elementary schools, high schools, secondary vocational schools of different types, even one college. Within the last decades substantially improved offer of various health care, shopping, freetime, sport facilities, etc. Rača is place with own vibrant local life with various events, festivals, meetings and associative life.
